XS21World goes upcountry
Different from last year, when we stayed in Dar es Salaam until the safari we had a week in Soni, Tanga this year.
Soni is a little village with nothing from what you’re used to have in Dar. There’s no internet cafe, no restaurants, no many cars or big houses and in short nothing much to do other than to admire the lovely green hills all around, the fresh air, the relaxed people and disciplined children in the schools. We stayed in a hostel / campsite so that we got plenty of time to be together, play cards, take naps and have drinks together in the afternoons and evenings. The playfield of the schools was up in the hills, bigger than any field we had worked before. All the children from other schools who had a chance would sit on the sides to watch us doing games and cheer for the winning party. The favorite activity in the afternoon when we were used to do ‘culture class’ was ngoma dancing, which the children would do endlessly together with their teachers.
Going upcountry is definitely something that we will repeat in other projects as well as it gives the participants a good idea of other parts of the country, different lifestyles and a totally different climate. Soni is cool!
